Seven Sisters
Music Video

Hong Kong is a behemoth of a city with a convoluted history – so much has happened here that we often forget how young the city actually is. Traditions have disappeared at a remarkable pace, and while this is often framed as purely a negative aspect of progress, notably and thankfully, the practice of arranged marriages is one such relic that is no longer around.
The scars however, still linger, and some of the last people in Hong Kong to remember the effects of this are the Weitou grandmothers of Lung Yeuk Tau, a village in Hong Kong’s New Territories near the border with China.
Rainbow Chan is a Melbourne-based artist with Weitou heritage from her mother’s side. On trips back to Hong Kong she was captivated by the stories of these strong women who were married away into unknown homes, but still had the ability to draw strength from their suffering. She’s reimagined their bridal laments, originally sung in the ancient Weitou dialect that dates almost back to the Song dynasty around 1000 years ago, into contemporary electronic arrangements that breath new life into their forgotten fury.
Today only a few of the Weitou brides remain, but they joined Rainbow as she created ‘Seven Sisters’, a new song that will be part of a theatrical performance to be completed later in 2023.

VOICES
Music Video

“VOICES” is about women empowerment, mental struggles and embracing our dualities when the white noise and the external voices invade our personal spaces.
In Mapuche mythology, Antu represents the Sun (pictured through the golden palette), as well as light, wisdom and spirit, and is married to Kueyen, a Wangulén spirit that represents the moon, (which we brought to life through the silver set up). In this video, the singer appears as both the Sun & the Moon as a visual representation of light and darkness, of femininity and masculinity. The duality of our own spirituality and our internal voices.
